Mustang golfers take to the links

Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The Girls and Boys golf teams tee off with their first competitions of the school year. Both teams competed in the annual Mustang Cup last Wednesday at the Heritage Harbor Golf Course.

Both teams competed in a two-person scramble with a match play format; the girls won 3–0.

The individual scores were –

  • Ashleigh Angelo/Jessica Kobetitsch won 2-1 over Preston Severs/Johnoy May
  • Ashlyn Einwachter/Zoe Phillips won 1 up over Stryker Reid/Mason Wozniak
  • Lauren Hosier/Mikayla Stokes won 4-3 over Eli Martinez/Elijah Ellingson/Noah Tollers

The regular season started Tuesday, with the Mustang boys hosting their first home match of the season at the Royal Lakes course at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club East.

The team was defeated by Sarasota Military Academy by one shot and St. Stephens by 10. Medalist for the Mustangs included freshman Preston Severs, with a 4-over par 40.

Other players included junior Stryker Reid with 43, senior Elijah Ellingson with 44, and sophomore Johnny May with 45.

Reid commented, “I’m very proud of our team. We have lots of potential. We are really looking forward to the rest of the season and improving our game.”

The boys’ team is being led this year by newly returned coach Dave Frantz. He coached the team years ago and has now returned after the departure of coach John Victor.

LRHS is now 5-12 and plays at Braden River on Thursday, Aug. 29.
