(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS cheerleading program has been working hard to prepare for football and competition seasons this school year. They attended this summer’s Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) Camp at the Sarasota Hyatt Resort in Sarasota.

The camp was four-days-long and practice was from 8:00 a.m. till 9:30 p.m. Sophomore and junior varsity cheerleader Kelsey Mcleod said, “Practicing hours at camp are long and tiring. We had to wake up at 6:00 in the morning to have time to get ready, eat breakfast, and get there early.”

Senior Briana Pierson, LRHS varsity cheerleading squads’ captain, said, “When at camp, we learned a dance, band chant, and several new cheers. On top of that we attended stunt clinics to help us learn sideline and elite stunts.”

The camp hosts a one-night themed party before the end of the camp. This year, it was themed “The Greatest Show of Summer.”

Varsity cheerleader sophmore Alyssa Ucciferri said, “Everyone at the camp got to dress up as people from the circus like clowns and the ring master. During it, we had to do activities including a heel stretch competition and a balancing game. Afterwards, we had a huge dance party with the whole camp.”

At camp the cheerleaders worked on routines to perform in front of friends and family on the last day.

“There were two types of routines: Rally and Game Day. In our rally routine we performed a dance and pyramid, and in our game day routine we performed a band chant along with two sideline cheers,” shared junior Madison Kahler, co-captain of the varsity cheer squad.

Varsity earned second place in their game day routine and first place in their rally routine.

“Varsity performed phenomenally in both routines, and the team and I are proud of what they presented to everyone,” said varsity coach Kiana Kowalewski.

LRHS teacher aide and junior varsity (JV) coach Sherri Haber said, “On the last day, both our junior varsity and varsity teams performed well and did everything they were supposed to. Junior varsity got second place in their game day routine and first place in their rally routine.”
