Gavin Laielli – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Football season is underway, but the ongoing rain has different plans. Many players and fans are disappointed that tonight’s Kick-Off Classic game is canceled.
Manatee Schools District spokesman Mike Barber said, “The constant rain has made the playing surfaces exceptionally soft, so it could render the footing on the fields as potentially dangerous. In addition, the damage the fields would endure during these preseason games could impact their playability for the remainder of the football season.”
Mustang varsity football player Gavin Goeden said, “It disappoints me knowing that this is my senior year, having limited games left. It’s a big let down especially for the team and coaches however hopefully it will be rescheduled.”
Games were canceled district wide, including games such as Cardinal Mooney at Bayshore, Manatee at Southeast, and Gibsonton Eastbay at Palmetto.
“The reasons for the cancellation is twofold – the safety of players and the protection of our playing fields,” continued Barber.
The next game will be taking place Aug. 23 vs. Bulldogs at Ida S. Baker High School in Cape Coral.
