Anabelle Lam – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Even though the 2019 school year is just getting started, the Lady Mustangs’ varsity volleyball team is already in full swing.
During the 2018 season, Coach Perrilee Hankins guided the team to a regional semifinal, the farthest they’ve been since making it to the state semi-finals in 2014.
Returning sophomore MacKenzie Schumcker says, “I’m excited for this year, but I feel like this season will be a little harder for us. We’re playing some bigger teams than we have before.”
The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) changes volleyball classifications every two years and the Lady Mustangs are now in a different district and class than last year.
They now play Hillsborough Lennard, North Port, Naples Gulf Coast and Sarasota Riverview in district games. Last year they plated Manatee, Sarasota, Braden River, Palmetto and Venice.
Junior Julia Keuhn is excited for this new challenge, “We’ve played the same teams that are around us for a while and it’s nice to have a change of pace with the new teams in our district.”
The Lady Mustangs’ start preseason starting at 4:30 p.m., Aug 15 against Riverview Tampa. Following that, the Mustangs play Wharton at 9 a.m., Aug 17. Both are home matches.
The team finished 17-11 in 2018 and with only two underclassmen and a heavy junior and senior class this year, they hope to make it build on their success.
