NEWS(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Professional actors from Florida Studio Theater (FST) stopped by LRHS to perform plays and creative pieces written by Mustangs.

Once a year FST holds a playwriting competition for over 3,000 students to show off their creativity.  The competition allows LRHS students to present their best work in a way that is fun and creative. On April 22 a group of actors at Florida Studio Theater came down to perform the winning plays.

Lakewood Ranch High School winners were –

  • “The Change a Piece of Writing Can Make” by Sarah M. Heller, junior
  • “Feel My Pulse” by Paige Alter, freshman
  • Honorable Mention – “The Waning Wordsmith” by Pauline Tarver, senior

Heller said, “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to get to share my work with other students.”

LRHS creative writing teacher Debra McCarthy said, “This was a great opportunity for all my students to show what they learned throughout the year.”

Along with creative writing, LRHS drama students also got to watch the performances.

Sophomore Julia Raymond said, “I am really glad we got to see the actors perform. It was a great learning opportunity for everyone in the class.”

Florida Studio Theater’s website explains what they look for in student work.

“Each play is read at least twice by FST staff members and community volunteers, seeking those that reveal the unique voice of the child who wrote it- a play that no adult could write. In selecting winners, FST looks for plays with an imaginative plot and character, a strong sense of rhythm in the dialogue, innate wisdom, and diverse themes.”
