Seniors brainstorm dorm essentials

Julia Drymon – Mustangs Ahead

Seniors icon(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- With college dorm room selection happening soon, upcoming college freshmen need to start considering the things they need for their new home away from home.

While dorm shopping, Mustangs should consider what their roommates are getting so they don’t double up on items. Split who gets the big essentials like microwave, coffee maker, area rug, shower curtain, water filter, etc.

While new college students can share some of the big things with roommates, they still need a lot of individual things. Here is a list of things students should bring to their dorms:

  • Sheet sets
  • Duvet or Comforter
  • Mattress pad and protector
  • Pillows
  • Shower caddy
  • Soaps & toiletries
  • Laundry soap
  • Laundry hamper
  • First aid kit
  • Storage bins
  • Air freshener
  • Electronics and chargers
  • Power Strip
  • Household cleaning supplies
  • Medications
  • Office supplies
  • Decorations
  • Command strips for decorations
  • Trash can
  • Towel set
  • Hangers
  • Umbrella
  • Snacks

Remember how small dorm rooms are while shopping and try to bring as little as possible to maximize space. Unnecessary items make rooms crowded and cluttered.

Another tip: hang clothes before moving clothes on hangers and wrap several hangers together in a trash bag making a garment bag. Once in the dorm room hang the bag in the closet and cut the trash bag off.

Living in a dorm is not easy and is a big change for most, but with the hardships comes the fun, so embrace the new experience of independence.
