(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS creative writing students were recognized by Sarasota’s Florida Studio Theater for their class play-writing project.
Earlier this year, the creative writing students participated in a playwriting contest that included 6,000 participants from all over the world. Students were asked to write 10-minute plays with multiple characters and settings.
LRHS creative writing teacher Debra McCarthy said, “We worked on learning the elements of playwriting, where instruction was given on structure, characterization, and plot development.”
After waiting several weeks, the students were happy to receive awards and letters for their work. Out of the 6,000 participants, LRHS junior Sarah Heller and senior Pauline Tarver placed in the top 15. Together they, with all the other winners, get to attend a banquet May 31.
Heller and Tarver will have their plays performed by Florida Studio Theatre to elementary schools audiences across Florida.
Heller said, “I am really grateful and it’s unbelievable they thought my play was good, it really means a lot to me.”
McCarthy said the opportunity was a great experience that helped many of the creative writing students improve and grow in their work.
“They worked really hard giving a lot of time and attention to make sure their finished product was pristine.” she said. “I am extremely proud of all my students.”
