(LAKEWOOD RANCH FL.)- It was a big weekend for the LRHS softball team as it officially secured the number one spot in the nation and improved to 18-0. The Mustangs defeated Gainesville High School 2-0 in 14 innings and Oakleaf High school (#10 in the nation) 5-4.

Sophomore Jillian Herbst said, “Even though we struggled at hitting throughout the game against Gainesville, we were solid on defense and extremely determined to win.”

Oakleaf defeated the Mustangs in last year’s playoffs and LRHS senior Maddie Koczersut is happy with the rematch victory.

“Being that last year we lost to Oakleaf in the state semi- finals it’s a huge confidence booster that we beat them this past weekend,” she said. “Coming off two big wins the team is excited to get back work and continue working toward our main goal, winning a state championship.”

This week’s softball schedule is as follows…

  •  Home game vs. Academy at the Lakes, Tuesday at 6 p.m. (varsity only).
  •  An away game at Venice High school Wednesday, junior varsity (JV) starts at 4:45 with varsity following at 7.
  •  Away game Thursday against Wellington High School starting at 6 p.m.
