Mustang Q & A – New football coach Rashad West

Olivia Benson – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – As spring football approaches, LRHS has recruited a new football coach. Head football coach Rashad West gave some insight on what to expect for the upcoming spring and fall seasons.

rashad westMustangs Ahead (MA): Why did you want the job at LRHS?

Rashad West (RW):  I felt it was a chance to come back and work with the young men in the community in which I grew up in.  It also was a chance to bring my career full circle as this is where my career got its start.  I also really believed in the vision that the principal and athletic director share.

MA: What are your goals for LRHS’s football?

RW:  To bring the program back to respectability.  I want to make this place a destination again, a program of which the school and the community can be proud of on and off the field.

MA: What are some of the Mustangs’ successes you can build on?

RW: At this point we’ll have to build on our minor successes.  Obviously, there hasn’t been much success as of late on the field, but we’ll figure out and determine what we deem as success.

MA: What is you football experience?  Where did you play and coach before this?

RW: I played at Southeast High School and then went on to Southeast Missouri State University.  My last stop as a head coach was at Southeast High School. I served as the head coach for two seasons before resigning in 2018.

MA: What is your educational experience?  Where did you go to school?  When did you graduate?

RW: I’m certified in English (Grades 5-9, 6-12), and physical education K-12. My undergrad degree is from Southeast Missouri State University and I received my master’s in education administration from the University of Phoenix in 2010.

MA:  How would you describe your reception at LRHS so far?

RW: It’s been awesome!  Everyone has welcomed me with open arms.  It’s also been a great experience to see so many familiar faces as well.

MA: When do you start?  When is your first game?

RW: I’ll be working in an “unattached” role this spring.  The plan is to work on campus this fall.  Our first spring football game is at 7 p.m. on May 16 at Lecanto High School.

MA: Anything you would like to tell Mustangs as you start your career here?

RW: I’d like them to know that we plan to build this program the right way and we will put a product on the field that they can be proud of and it will be exciting to watch.  It won’t happen overnight, but please know it will happen.  And also, welcome to “The New Ranch!”
