Rachel Monroe – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH FL.) – LRHS varsity softball team improved to 5-0 Wednesday night and the junior varsity (JV) Mustangs are now 6-0.
The Mustangs took on the Sarasota High School Sailors Tuesday night. JV defeated the sailors 15-0 in just three innings. Varsity followed that with a 10-run-rule win in five innings.
Highlights of the varsity team included senior Maddie Koczersut 3 for 4 with a homerun, double and four RBI’s; juniors Claire Davidson 2 for 3; Kali Reis 3 for 3 with one RBI; Avery Goelz with a double and two RBI’s; freshman Grace Hoage with a double and one RBI. Brooklyn Lucero, junior, got the win in the circle for the Mustangs, allowing just three hits over five innings and eight strike-outs. Senior Kayla Howald came in to pitch in the last inning and struck out two.
Wednesday the varsity team traveled to Braden River for their first rivalry game of the season. Mustangs got the win 6-0.
Davidson took care of business at the River, not only in the circle but in the batter’s box as well. She pitched a two-hit complete game shutout with 11 strike-outs. In addition, she was 3-4 with a homerun and an RBI. Goelz hit a homerun and had two RBIs. Koczersut was 1-2 with an RBI. Sophomore Jillian Herbst was 1-1, with a triple.
The next game for the Mustangs will be March 12 at home against Manatee. JV starts at 5:30 p.m. with varsity following at 7 p.m.
