Two Mustang wrestlers on verge of states

Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- This past weekend LRHS’s wrestling team was at regionals in Osceola. Unfortunately, the Mustangs did not win the event but placed 19th.

Though the team was not too successful as a whole, two juniors and one freshman advanced to the blood round. A blood round is when a player is one match away from making it to state finals.

Juniors Matt Monohan, weighing 138 pounds, and Andrew Henry, 195 pounds, and 152 pound freshman Rancin Coons all have the opportunity to advance.

LRHS’s wrestling team is composed of a variety of grade levels and for many it’s only their first or second year of wrestling.

“Most of our players are freshman or juniors. We only have one or two seniors that are leaving this year, so there is a lot of room for growth and progress,” said coach Tyler Small.

Despite the mediocre results, Small was still proud of his team.

“We were facing some really tough teams, but in my eyes, I think our team did great. That is where I expected we would place,” said Small.

States take place at 8- 10 a.m. and 8- 9:30 a.m. from March 8-9  at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.
