Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The varsity boys and girl’s tennis teams are off to a strong 2019.

The Mustangs have had three matches so far this year. Coach Ed Bongart said, “I’m happy for both of my teams, especially the boys, they are undefeated so far this year.”

The boys won 7-0 against both Manatee and Bayshore at home on Feb. 14 and 21. According to sophomore Joey Wietecha, “We have a great start to our year with being undefeated and keeping the other teams from even scoring points against us.”

The girls team won the home match against Bayshore 7-0 Feb. 14.  Annaliese Prium, a junior, stated, “We had a very strong lead against Bayshore, both the girls’ and boys’ teams kept them from scoring points.”

The girls later lost their match against Manatee 1-5.

“Even though we lost that match, that motivated the team to practice and better prepare for the next match,” reflected Prium.

The match against Sarasota that was supposed to take place on Feb. 26  was rained out. It is unclear whether the match will be rescheduled.

The next match is scheduled on Tuesday, March 5 at home. The boys and girls teams are both confident they will win. Bongart states, “I am confident both the teams are going to have a successful year.”
