Brady Roberts – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Thursday night, the LRHS boys’ varsity basketball team defeated the Gulf Coast High School Sharks 47-36 in the FHSAA class 8A regional quarter-final.
LRHS had a nine-point lead at the half, but Gulf Coast fought back to make it a tie game late in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs were able to persevere with solid team defense and big shots by LRHS junior Keon Buckley and senior Joshua Young.
Buckley commented, “It was a little closer than we would have liked but I was very proud of our team for taking care of business late in the game. We are going to have to stay focused for the next game.”
LRHS head varsity basketball coach Jeremy Schiller agreed with Buckley, “I was really proud of our ability to find a way to win. At this point in the season it doesn’t matter if you win by one or win by twenty, it’s just about winning.”
Schiller was also excited this team gets to continue this journey together and continue their journey towards the teams’ goal of a state championship.
The next game will be an away game 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26. against Riverdale High School.
Last season Riverdale defeated LRHS in the regional quarter final 64-61 in overtime.
“We can’t let what happened last year against Riverdale affect us in any way this year, we just have to go out there and play our style of basketball, and the result of the game will take care of itself,” said LRHS senior Logan Higgins.
