Three Mustangs win History Fair awards

Academics(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Three LRHS juniors won awards from the Manatee County History Fair.

Sophia Teng won first place in the senior historical paper category with her essay, “We Didn’t Start the (Triangle Shirtwaist) Fire.”

Lily Porter won second place with the essay, “The Triumph and Tragedies of Flying Wallendas.”

Potter was pleased with her recognition and added, “I’m glad to have gotten second place, and I plan on working harder for states.”

Junior Chloe Nelson won third place in the with her essay, “Triumphs and Tragedies of 9/11.” Nelson said, “I’m very happy to win and it’s an honor to receive the reward.”

All three are students of LRHS history teacher Tom Honsa, who said history fair recognition is a significant honor.

“Students should be proud any time they’re recognized by the community,” he said.  “History fair papers take significant research and writing skill and these students have demonstrated they are among the best.”

Both Teng and Potter were invited to submit their work to the state history fair.  The Florida History Fair is scheduled for May 5-7 in Tallahassee.
