Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS Mustang boys soccer team will advance to the regional semifinals after winning 2-1 against Lutz Steinbrenner High School Wednesday night.

Captain Travis Freeman, senior, scored Mustangs’ the first goal on a penalty kick (PK), after the goalie had challenged one of the forwards.

Freeman told HTPreps, “The ball was bouncing around a little bit,” Freeman said. “Our striker challenged for it. The keeper came out strong and knocked him over. It was a tight call. The ref saw it as a PK.”

LRHS senior Wilmer Yanes scored the next goal on a set piece after a foul outside the penalty area.

The foul gave LRHS a free kick so Yanes and senior Alex Thompson lined up behind the ball. Thompson then passed to senior Joshua Hayes, who slid the ball to Yanez, resulting in a 2-0 lead.

Steinbrenner came back with 2:08 minutes remaining in the second half on a PK after Ryan Freeman, goalie and captain for LRHS, challenged the ball and was called on pushing a Steinbrenner player.

LRHS coach Vito Bavaro was pleased with the boys’ performance and told HTPreps, ““We played a little tentative, a little nervous. Once we scored, we played with a lot more confidence. We had a lot of chances to score. We kept them in the game, but we controlled a lot of the game.”

The Mustangs play Wesley Chapel Wiregrass Ranch in the Regional Semifinals at 7 p.m. on Sat. Feb. 9.
