Nolan Carpenter – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS varsity boys soccer team won the district championship 5-0 against the Riverview Rams Thursday night.
This was the Mustangs’’ seventh straight district title.
The Mustangs advance to the regional quarterfinals Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:00, against Tampa Steinbrenner High School at home.
The Mustangs scored three of their five goals in the first 14 minutes. Senior Wilmer Yanes scored three goals, putting him at a season total of 27. He’s just two goals short of tying the school record of 29.
This is the second year in a row the Mustangs beat Riverview in the district final; last year they beat them 3-2. The Mustangs lost last year in the regional quarterfinals.
Goalie Ryan Freeman, senior, said “We’re ready this year to win the regional. We had a great record this year, great team, great everything. This is our year to win the regional, and it is going to happen.”
Expanding on this was Joshua Hays, senior, said, “…it was a few trick corners we had practiced that helped us win last night’s game.”
Mustang Captain Travis Freeman, senior, said “It was really special last night to get our seventh straight district title. The crowd was electric, and it was a great game. We came out ready to play and grabbed the momentum early which propelled us to a convincing victory. We want to thank all the fans who have supported us all year and we’re excited for our next game on Wednesday.”
