Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)  – Wednesday night the girls’ varsity soccer team won the district championship, beating Manatee High School in an intense 1-0 game.

The game was scoreless after 90 minutes and it had to go into two 10-minute over-time periods.  No one scored in the first 10-minute period, then with three minutes left in the second period senior Mustang captain Hajar Benjoud shot the ball into the lower right corner of the net, scoring the winning goal for the Mustangs.

Senior Lindsey Benedetto said, “I thought it was the best game we’ve played all year.  Every single player put their heart out on the field and our team definitely deserved this district title.”

Regionals are scheduled to be for 7 p.m. next Tuesday at home.  The Mustangs’ opponent has yet to be decided.

Head coach Delaney Riggins said, “I could not be more proud of these girls for everything they’ve accomplished this season.  They are so deserving of the district title and I’m just so happy we were able to come out with the win.”
