Seniors icon(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- A new year can mean new beginnings. For seniors here at LRHS January and February are quite significant months filled with new experiences.

Two of Florida’s most prominent public colleges make decisions on admissions in late January and early February.

On Jan. 31, seniors will receive their decisions from Florida State University (FSU), and on Feb. 8 seniors will hear from University of Florida (UF).

Many seniors here at the Ranch are extremely anxious as many of them applied to these two schools and regard them as their top choice schools.

LRHS senior Valerie Logrande regards FSU as her first-choice school. “I think about Jan. 31 every day, but it keeps me focused on my senior year classes and motivates me to continue to do well.”

Another LRHS senior, Annabelle Peck, is hoping for an acceptance from UF. “I’m not really stressed, most of my stress was just getting the application in on time and now I am just excited and impatient to find out.”

University of Florida (UF) located in Gainesville, is rated as the number one public university in the state by US News and World Report. The standards are set high for admission with an acceptance rate of around 47.5%, so less than half of the applicants will be admitted.

Florida State University (FSU), located in the state capital, Tallahassee, is also regarded as a top public university in Florida. The acceptance rate for FSU is around 55.9%, still very competitive with a little more than half of the applicants will receive admission offers.

In contrast, senior Brady Roberts isn’t bothered by the upcoming decisions. “I was never really interested in those schools (FSU and UF) because I want to stay close to home and I didn’t like the campuses.”

Roberts is applying to Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) and University of Central Florida (UCF). Both universities use the rolling admission system. This means that the admission committee reviews the application and gives a decision when you submit it instead of releasing decisions on a set date.
