LRHS softball team hopes to build on 2018 success.
Rachel Monroe – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS 2019 softball season is right around the corner, Mustangs are reflecting back on last year’s season, hungry for more.
Last year both the varsity and JV softball teams had outstanding seasons. Varsity had a record of 24-5, making it all the way to state semi-finals and losing narrowly to Oakleaf High School 1-0. The JV softball team had a record of 17-1.
Softball tryouts will be held from Jan. 22-24. Head coach TJ Goelz said grades and player character will be very important factors when it comes to the decision of making the team or not.
“How hard a player works both in the classroom and on the field, how coachable they are and how well they will gel with their teammates is very important. We will be looking for players with high level character who will be a great teammate,” added Goelz.
sophomore Jillian Herbst, who is a returning varsity player, is excited to succeed and finish what they started last year.
“This year, this team has the potential to do anything and everything we put our mind to. I’m excited to have a very successful season with great teammates and great coaches,” she said.
Goelz agreed, “Expectations are very high – as they should be. We are loaded with very high-level Division 1 committed athletes. This is the most talented team LRHS has ever had on paper and that’s saying something because I said the same thing the last two years.”
Goelz comments that it is important to not only show talent on paper but also on the field.
“We must bond as a team with a team first attitude. We must get better as the season progresses and play our best softball when it matters. Simply, these young ladies have an excellent opportunity to do something that’s never been done here, and we will work very hard to make that happen,” stated Goelz.
