Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Two LRHS girls weightlifters will compete in the regional competition on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 12 p.m. at Charlotte High School.

Last week they competed at districts, where they were among the top six who qualified for regionals.

LRHS sophomore Nicole Pritchard and junior Hailey Wahlers made it to regionals.  If they win, they will move onto the weightlifting state championships.

Pritchard said, “I’m preparing for regionals by going to the weightlifting room every day and trying to improve my strength.”

Pritchard explained why she competes, “Weightlifting pushes you mentally and physically. If you want to get stronger, then you must put in the work. It’s all about how much you want it.”

According to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) website, lifters have the opportunity to advance after two lifts.

“The top lifter in each weight class who lifts the greatest total weight (bench press and clean & jerk combined) overall in the region shall qualify for and advance to the Florida High School State Championships state meet.”
