Brady Roberts – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Tuesday night the LRHS varsity boys basketball team defeated district opponent Manatee Hurricanes 61-25 at home.
Mustang junior Keon Buckley led the way for the Mustangs with 26 points.
LRHS head varsity basketball coach Jeremy Schiller said, “I was proud of how we responded in the second half. I was pleased that we started to play at the level we expect from our team.”
Buckley agreed with Schiller.
“It is always nice to win a game at home,” he said. “The crowd provided a lot of energy which always helps the team during the game.”
This puts the Mustangs to an overall record of 11-4, 5-0 against district opponents.
Buckley remarked how hard it is to be undefeated in the district and how it speaks to the overall talent of LRHS.
The next game is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 18 at home against rival Braden River High School. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
This will be the Mustangs’ second matchup against the Pirates this season. LRHS won the first matchup 69-33.
“Rival games are always a big deal to both teams,” said senior Logan Higgins. “Both teams are going to give it their all, but I believe that if we play our hardest, we will win the game.”
While past games may distract some teams, Schiller does not believe that will be an issue for his team.
“I think it’s pretty easy because our focus is improving every day whether it’s practice or a game,” said Schiller, “One of our focuses is to always perform at a high level and not let past games distract us.”
Fans play a big role for home teams, and Higgins wanted to stress the importance of LRHS fans at home games.
“They give us so much energy and distract the other team from the game,” said Higgins.
