Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – On Wednesday, Jan. 9, the girls’ varsity soccer team defeated St. Stephens 1-0 in a very emotional and intense game.

Senior Hajar Benjoud blasted a 25-yard shot in the first half, scoring the only goal of the game. Both teams had many close opportunities, hitting the crossbars and posts multiple times.

The match was the first back at former LRHS varsity girls coach Guy Virgilio. Virgilio now coaches St. Stephens, who were undefeated before the game.

“It’s a little bit emotional watching those girls play, I’m so used to yelling at them,” commented Coach Virgilio, who had coached at LRHS for 19 years.

Coach Delaney Riggins played for Virgilio for four years when she was a Mustang.

The game was originally supposed to be at Lakewood Ranch at 7:00 p.m. but was moved to St. Stephens at 6:00 p.m. due to stadium light failure.

The Mustangs’ record is now 9-2 and have won all their district games.
