Boys soccer getting national recognition

Madison Cartano – Mustangs Ahead

Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS boys soccer team is undefeated and ranked eighth in the nation. They are hoping to advance to the state championship for the second time in three years this February.

In a Bay News 9 interview, coach Vito Bavaro said the team’s diversity is the key to success.

“They bring a different aspect to how they play. Some play more physical than others, and some play flashier than others. At the end of the day, they all play hard,” Bavaro said.

One of their players, senior Alex Thompson, is from England and represents one of seven different countries on the team. The team has players from Honduras, Ireland, Argentina, England, Italy, and even Japan.

“I think we play well together. With the different styles we grew up playing, we all come together and play well as a team,” said senior Ryan Freeman.

“We’ve been somewhat of a powerhouse in the area. Most people in the state have heard of us and know who we are,” added Freeman. He and his twin senior Travis Freeman made it to the state championship two years ago.

“Everyone’s big game is when they play Lakewood Ranch, and we live up to that,” said Bavaro.

Senior Wilmer Yanez said, “Our goal is mainly to make it to states and win.”

The team is currently 11-0.
