Brady Roberts – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- After going 1-1 in their preseason matchups against Leonard and Tampa Tech high schools, the LRHS boys’ basketball team will play their first regular season matchup against Lakewood High School.
The game will be played at Eckerd College with junior varsity (JV) playing at 6 p.m. and varsity tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
While this is the LRHS boys’ varsity basketball team’s first regular season matchup of the year, St. Petersburg Lakewood has already played six regular season games. St. Petersburg Lakewood had a 4-2 record during those games.
The Mustangs are coming off a 24-5 season and made it to the regional quarterfinal. While the team missed last season’s goal was to win a state championship, there was still plenty of good that came from it.
“Last year’s team was special,” said junior Keon Buckley, “so it was obviously a disappointment to not reach our goal of a state championship. However, I believe that this team has been working extremely hard towards our goal of this season, which is to win a state championship.”
The team put a lot of work in during the offseason to improve as much as possible and give the team the best opportunity to win.
LRHS head varsity basketball coach Jeremy Schiller commented on the offseason. He said, “I think that working as hard as we do puts us in the best situation to win, which is the ultimate goal of our program.”
Both the LRHS boys’ basketball team and Lakewood High School’s basketball team are projected to be elite teams this year.
LRHS senior Joshua Young said, “This is a great team to play for our first game of the season. A very talented team on the road should be a good learning experience for the team. I know we are all hoping to come away with the win.”
Schiller also commented on the upcoming season, “I’m excited about the journey. We have a great group of players, coaches, and student assistants and I’m looking forward to working with them.”
