(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – With football season over, winter sports are starting up. Boys and girls soccer seasons have already started, while basketball begins this week.

The biggest LRHS rivalry is against Braden River High School. Many of the athletes know each other and love competing against one another.

The boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Braden River 2-0 on Nov. 6.

Senior Mustang soccer player Alex Thompson said, “I think a lot of us know each other from middle school and playing together on travel teams, so there is a lot trash talk between both teams, which is fun. Obviously though, off the field we are more civil.”

Thompson added, “I think knowing there are so many people in the stands, we play a lot harder against our biggest rival. In the end it’s all about getting the win for the team, but it is much more fun beating our friends. It definitely means more than a regular game, so it was great to get the shutout win.”

The girls’ varsity basketball team is set to play Braden River on Dec. 13.

Sophomore basketball player Riley Simmons said, “Everyone on the team gets excited for the Braden River game because most of us are friends and it’s fun to compete against them. I am pretty confident that we will win but I know it will be a good game.”

The boys’ varsity basketball team is scheduled to face off against the Pirates on Jan. 11, 2019.

Assistant basketball coach senior Brady Roberts, an LRHS senior, said, “The Lakewood Ranch vs. Braden River varsity basketball game is going to be one of the biggest district games of the year. The team gets really excited and always plays hard. I am really looking forward to the game.”
