Csenge Csicsek – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Many Mustangs are applying to college and starting to think about scholarships. College is expensive and receiving a scholarship can make a big impact.
Scholarships help take weight off a student’s shoulders, and there are many of them out there. Mustangs can receive scholarships for a variety of schools and reasons including music, arts, volunteering and athletics, such as football.
LRHS college and career counselor Michelle Todoroff said, “Scholarships help students in the long run by paying off expenses and providing a better future for the students.” Students can contact Todoroff in room 610.
Some things that will improve the chances of receiving a scholarship include being involved in community events. The more a student volunteers, the scholarship chances become available.
At LRHS the most popular scholarship seems to be the Bright Futures Scholarship. However, there are certain requirements that need to be met to obtain this scholarship, such as credits, classes, and community service.
Page 14 of the LRHS student planner has more information on scholarships and financial aid:
“Scholarships, another form of financial aid, can be categorized into four types:
- The State of Florida’s Bright Futures Scholarship Program which includes the Florida Academic Scholars Award, the Florida Medallion Scholars Award, and the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award.
- Scholarships given by local and national organizations which Guidance will post and announce during the student’s senior year (most have specific requirements in the areas of GPA, community service, area of study, family heritage, monetary need).
- Scholarships given by organizations nationwide that can be accessed by the student either through scholarship resource books or websites.
- Scholarships available directly from the post-secondary institution which you will be attending. You should inquire into the availability of these scholarships with the Financial Aid director or Admissions Counselor. You may also be automatically awarded a school-based scholarship based on your need and/or merit.”
