Mustangs celebrate advancing to the state’s top 16

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Wednesday night the Lakewood Ranch volleyball Mustangs defeated Fort Myers Riverdale High School 3-2 to advance to the regional semi-finals.

Coach Perri Hankins said, “Our team really had to show their strengths and toughness in a five-set road win against District 12 champs, Riverdale. We are now in the top 16 teams in the State and are going for top eight versus Venice on Tuesday. “

The top performers of the game were Yami Zamarripa with 35 digs, MacKenzie Shmucker with 35 assists, and Anna Shelby Dees top hitter with 17 kills.

Dees said, “I am so happy we were able to beat Riverdale and I am so excited to be advancing to district semi-finals. We all played great and I am so proud of the team and how we did. I hope we will have a great crowed coming out to support us as we have at many of our games.”

Junior Sam Vandersommen said, “Winning against Riverview felt great! I am so proud of my team and I am so excited to be heading to Venice to play in the Regional semi-finals. I can’t wait to play them again and I hope we are able to take home the win and advance higher within the region.”

The girls will play at Venice High School in the regional semi-finals 7 p.m., Oct. 30.
