Marissa Briggs – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Students for Safety is a new club that sophomore Ella Botko and I recently founded. We wanted to make an impact in our school’s safety and contribute to the safety of both student and staff here on campus.
We came up with the idea for the club this past summer while discussing our desire to have a positive influence on our school and community. Our goal was to bring a club to LRHS that is new, and concerns topics that are currently affecting the U.S.
We were inspired to start this club after reflecting on the Parkland shooting that took place last school year. After that horrific day, I, like many people, was scared to go back to school.
When Botko and I thought about how we felt following those life-changing events, we knew we needed to do our part to ensure the fact that nothing like that would ever happen here at the Ranch.
“I wanted to see change throughout the community and want to show students they can make a change if they work hard. I hope to see vast improvements in our school’s structure and student body to how they view safety and protect it as much as possible,” said Botko.
Our club’s slogan is “provide, protect, prevent,” meaning we will provide students and staff with increased safety measures, protect those on campus, and doing our part to prevent any instances such as Parkland from occurring. The goal of Students for Safety is to increase security measures at our school by adding features to the infrastructure here.
We held our first meeting Monday, Oct. 1, from 2:30-3 p.m. in room 901. When reflecting on our first meeting, Botko felt “optimistic that people do care about [campus safety] and are willing to take a stand for something they care about. I am positive that we can have a great impact throughout the community,” said Botko.
Our next meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in room 564. We are grateful to those who showed interest in such an important cause and hope to see more people attend in the future. Botko and I are looking forward to contributing our part to the school’s safety and are excited for what the future holds.
