LRHS Mustangs look forward to college opportunities

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- LRHS seniors are getting ready to go to college, and with that comes writing college essays.

A question many seniors have is, what exactly makes a good college essay?

First, in a college essay, students should include something interesting about themselves and they should be sincere.

“It should be personal rather than just a story,” said LRHS college and career advisor Michelle Todoroff.

When colleges are accepting students, they look for someone who stands out; someone who can contribute to their college in a positive way.

“Students need to be careful not to make their essays sound like it could be written by anyone,” stated Todoroff.  A students’ essays should be unique to them.

There are many resources, such as websites and books, on how to write a good college essay. English teachers here at school are also a great resource.

When asked about college essays, LRHS English teacher Mary Ellen Eskett, “Of course I have encountered amazing essays. One of the main things I admire is when the student is honest.”

When writing college essays, seniors should keep in mind that they need to be honest, sincere, and a bit personal. They should also keep in mind that they need to stand out in the applicant crowd, in order to impress their dream college.
