(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- LRHS Varsity football suffered a 21-14 loss to Ida Baker High School in their home opener Friday.

With seconds left in the game the Mustangs were on the two-yard line with the chance to tie up the game and take it into overtime. Unfortunately, the team was unable to score.

“It was a tough loss, we made mistakes that we shouldn’t have.” said senior linebacker Drew Mitts. “The rain led to us [the team] making a lot of errors.”

The game originally was scheduled to start at 7:30 but was delayed until 8:15 due to heavy rain.

Running back Kieran Connolly, senior, said, “One loss doesn’t mean anything, we’ll get the win next week.”

Although it may have been a defeat, the team had various highlights.

Senior defensive back Dylan Bennett had an interception, junior running back Jake Turner and senior quarterback George Davis both ran for touchdowns, and middle linebacker Mitts had a big night with a forced fumble, fumble recovery, and a sack.

The Mustang’s record is currently 0-1 and the team will be looking to improve next Friday away against the Bayshore Bruins.
