Morgan DeGlopper– Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- On Aug. 29, Future Health Professionals (HOSA) will have an informational meeting after school to welcome prospective members.
HOSA is a health-based club where students can come together to learn about and explore the medical field. The club has a competitive element where students can compete in over 55 health themed events.
Last year the LRHS HOSA chapter excelled in their competitions. Sixteen students earned the chance to compete at the state level and one student moved on to nationals.
HOSA also allows students to increase their knowledge of the medical field. A new aspect of this year’s chapter will be the opportunity to attend multiple presentations from guest speakers in the professional field and access to hands-on experience through health-based volunteer opportunities.
Another new feature of this year’s chapter will be a club-managed website. This website will feature important forms and documents, meeting minutes, and upcoming dates for HOSA events. The website will be introduced during the Aug. 29 meeting.
To its members HOSA is not just a club. It is a vessel of opportunity and education. Current member Adina Mayo, junior, said, “It’s given me tons of opportunities to have new experiences.”
Mayo served as last year’s vice president and competed at last year’s state leadership conference.
“Even though you are there to compete, it turns into a very fun bonding experience and brings the club closer no matter what the results are,” she continued.
Adviser and LRHS physical education teacher Carol Lidey is optimistic for this year’s chapter. She thinks the club could grow to 100 members. “It’s going to be big. We will definetly have a presence in the school,” remarked Lidey.
