(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- “Creative writing is the art of composing a piece for publication,” explained Debra McCarthy, the new LRHS creative writing teacher. “The writing process includes not only the process of journaling or generating, but also phases of reading, viewing, mentoring, experimenting, revising, and editing.”
McCarthy is an LRHS veteran and recently took on responsibility for the creative writing classes.
The course is designed to allow students to become skilled readers and writers. Students will grow in their ability to write for different purposes, gather and internalize the rhetoric at work in various texts, contribute to meaningful discourse, and apply academic writing rules and conventions.
McCarthy is very eager to help students learn about the writing process.
“My expectations for this school year are to make students aware of an author’s purpose and style,” she said, “as well as to teach them to apply the rules and conventions of academic writing so writing is clear and purposeful.”
McCarthy is excited to work with her new students and former students in her new class.
McCarthy shared, “Creative Writing enables me the flexibility to use various sources to teach the core components of narrative craft, literature tropes, literature analysis, and intellectual discourse.”
