(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS Mustangs swim team kicked off the season with three pre-season practices Aug. 7-9. Tryouts started at 4 p.m. on Aug. 10 and lasted around an hour.

Coaches Julie Santiago and Kyle Steinberg had cut swimmers this season, for the first time in Santiago’s coaching career.

”It wasn’t an easy decision to make,” said Santiago.

The main reason Santiago had to make cuts to the 2018-2019 school year was because of the number of people per lane and the timeslot the Mustangs receive in the pool at the YMCA. The team ended up keeping 28 girls and 15 boys.

The first practice including the whole team was from 3:15- 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 13. The Mustangs had a short team meeting before jumping into the water and getting to work.

Swimmers say they’re very excited for the season and are working as hard as they can to claim the Manatee County championship in September. Anyone who qualifies for the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championships will finish out their high school season on Nov. 10 in Stuart, Florida.
