(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS Blood Drive Committee is hosting its first meeting of the year at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, in room 517. Current members and anyone interested in joining can attend the meeting.
Blood Drive Committee allows students to get community service hours through the club by gathering participants to draw blood and helping on the day of the blood drives.
“Donating blood has many benefits,” stated LRHS Blood Drive Committee adviser Rebekah Lester. “Last year the blood drawn here was sent to the victims of the Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. There are normally around 100 students who donate blood at each blood drive,”
Scholarships are given to those committee members who help the most, along with the people who donate the most during their years at LRHS.
Last year seven students were given scholarships from the Bubba Saves Lives Scholarship Fund. Each student got around $820 towards college tuition and a total of $5,740 was awarded.
The first LRHS blood drive of the year is Aug. 23. Students can sign up to donate during all lunches on Tuesday, Aug. 21 and Wednesday, Aug. 22.
To donate blood participants must be at least 16 with parent approval or 18. Pizza and drinks will be provided for those who donate.
“I encourage students to join because it is a lot of fun and helps save lives,” shared Lester.
Blood Drive Committee will also hold three other blood drives this school year. Those dates are Oct. 26, Jan. 31, and Apr. 4.
