(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The Mustang softball team defeated Manatee High Thursday for the district championship. The final score was 14-4, with the game stopping in the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Sophomore Payton Kinney started the game and needed some help from sophomore Brooklyn Lucero for pitching relief. Junior Kayla Howald ended the game, allowing no runs.

Senior Madi LoCastro said, “It was a little rough in the beginning, but we all came together at the end and finished the game strong.”

Senior Morgan Cummins lead the team to victory with two home runs and six runs. Cummins said, “I always play the game like it’s my last, I take every opportunity I can to be better than I was before.”

The Mustangs will advance to the regional quarterfinals.

Mustangs will play Largo Pinellas Park 7 p.m. Wednesday at home.

Junior varsity player Maddi Koczsurt is prepared for the next game, “I have been in a little hitting slump lately, but after last night’s game I have gained more confidence in myself.”
