Donna Dunkum – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS Track Team dominated the FHSAA 4A District 8 meet Monday at Seminole High in Pinellas County. Both boys and girls took home first place trophies.  The boys had 135 points and girls 188.50.

The top four individual competitors from each event move onto regional competition at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland on Thursday, April 26.

Head LRHS track coach Mark Napier said he was pleased with the hard-won results.

“I knew it was going to be difficult,” he said.  “I wasn’t expecting the results due to the weather conditions. I’m pleased on how everyone competed.”

Mustang junior James Rivera won first in 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.48 and 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.96. Rivera sets records for 110 and 300 hurdles at districts.

Sophomore Samantha Van der Sommen won high jump with a height of 5’2″.

Sophomore Ava Klein placed first in 400-meter dash with a time of 59.54.

Senior Shay Lee placed first in 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.16.

Junior Jonathan Reid placed first in the 800-meter run with a time 1:59.68 and the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:29.31.

“I thought we performed very well at districts,” Reid said. “We all competed hard and produced good results when we needed to. All the hard work we’ve put in is starting to show and we are all excited for regionals next Thursday, Apr. 26. We’ll have to work hard this week to prepare for next week, but I’m confident in our team that we’ll do well.”

Senior Karen Lyvers won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.48. She also won pole vault with the height of 12 feet.

Both girls and boys won the 4×400 meter relays and the boys also took home first in the 4×800 meter relay. Both teams are continuing onto regionals.

Coach Napier quoted, “Championship programs don’t rebuild, they reload.”
