Johnny Reid – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- While most kids go on vacation or the beach during spring break, the LRHS varsity track and field teams competed in two of the biggest meets of the season.
The Mustangs traveled to Tallahassee to compete at Florida State University (FSU) relays March 23 -24. With events stretched across two days, the athletes were able to watch the college athletes on Friday and then compete themselves on both Friday and Saturday.
In the 800-meter run on March 23, Mustang senior Shay Lee ran 2:17 to place eighth. Senior Andrew Dean ran 1:56 to place 11th overall.
The next day, on March 24, senior Karen Lyvers broke the pole vault school record, previously held by Olivia Ogles, vaulting 12 feet two and one-half inches to win the competition.
In the high jump, sophomore Samantha Van der Sommen finished fifth while senior Harry Barthelemy finished seventh. The throwers also had a strong showing, with senior Morgan Lingle placing sixth in the discus and senior Noah Oxley placing fifth in the shot put.
On the distance side, the 4×800 meter relay team placed sixth overall while junior Johnny Reid placed sixth in the 1600-meter run.
The very next weekend, the Mustangs traveled to Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville from Thursday, March 29 until Saturday, Mar. 31.
On Thursday, Lee placed 13th in the 800 while senior Julianne Dillon placed 14th. In the boys’ pole vault, senior Nick Napier finished 14th.
On Friday, Lyvers placed ninth in the pole vault. That evening, Reid broke the 1600-meter school record by running a time of 4:18, placing sixth overall.
The last day of the meet was Saturday, and the 4×800 relay placed fourth with a time of 8:06.
Up next is the Varsity County Championships at Manatee High School on Tuesday, March 3. This is the final meet before the state series which includes districts, regionals, and state finals.
