(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Last weekend the LRHS varsity girls softball team traveled to Jacksonville’s tournament of champions.

They played three teams from all over Florida out of eight teams total, the tournament was by invitation only.

The Mustangs knocked out former state champions Clay County Oakleaf High School from playing in the championship game, Oakleaf put up a fight but the Mustangs pulled through with a 7-6 win after two extra innings.

Going into the game the girls didn’t feel any pressure; they were excited to play a team as good as they are. They prepared by practicing hard every day.

The Mustangs played Aucilla Christian Academy in the tournament championship game, beating them 11-0.

Junior Maddie Koczersut said, “The win felt is if we were playing a state championship and this game showed what we need to work on still, but I am very proud of all the hard work so far in the season.”

Sophomore Brooklyn Lucero said, “I thought this weekend was an eye opener, it allowed us to see our true potential and I think that is exactly what we needed.”

The Mustangs wore tournament championship shirts Monday to celebrate the weekend win.
