LRHS math teacher Drexel Houston (l) helps senior Luke Evans

“Mustangs Ahead” is asking teachers “Why do you teach?” This segment by Paige Venuto is about LRHS math teacher Drexel Houston.

I really enjoy the school environment. I love learning and when you are teaching you are always learning. I also love that teaching gives me the opportunity to coach and work with kids; I find it very fulfilling.

The moment I got out of college I started teaching. I taught eighth grade science. During this year I started my Master’s in Sports Management Athletic Administration and then went back to school full-time to finish my Master’s degree. After I finished school, I started working at IMG Academy for six years, and that is how I came to Florida.

This year will be my 10th year of teaching. I started working at Lakewood Ranch High School in 2012 and I currently teach Biology 1 and AP Biology.

My favorite part about my job is the interaction with students and seeing them learn new concepts. I love seeing the material click with the students and getting them interested in what I do. You have challenging kids in all levels but it is about overcoming their individual obstacles. It’s not a class, it’s each individual student.

I don’t have a lot of least favorites about this job. If I had to pick one it would be the grading, but that is also fulfilling because you can see improvement and comprehension.
