Jordan Heffner – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – “Work towards your goals, but be willing to change them.”
Nate March is the coordinator of communications and broadcasting for the Bradenton Marauders, and is dedicated to motivating students to join the journalism industry.
He visited LRHS Wednesday and Thursday and spoke to Journalism 1 students.
March has spoken at numerous colleges, but this was only his second high school visit. He said that he finds community engagements useful, and he had plenty of advice to give to the students.
“Look for ways to get involved in sports activities,” said March. He strongly urged students interested in sports announcing to do this for two main reasons, “I learned more about sports by taking part in extracurricular activities, and it helped me build connections within my community.”
March said he had been volunteering for years prior to getting this job, mainly at the Boys and Girls club.
While March is hopeful that some of the students will find interest in a career in journalism, he reminded them not to be consumed by their potential occupation, “You can’t build your whole mindset around your job; you have to be a human outside of the workplace.”
March also shared his thoughts on the future of journalism.
“You will always have the basics; it’s just a matter of how the message is delivered.” He mentioned how he and his team are working to make their website more accessible on their mobile devices.
March said the number of people viewing the team website from cellular devices has gone up 200%, and his career is all about doing justice to the audience.
