(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – High school students across the country are fans of the hit CW show “Riverdale.”  The show debuted in January and has an 88% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

What many fans may not be aware of, however, is the long successful pre-TV legacy of the “Riverdale” characters.

The Archie Comics line of comic books is one of the most successful, longest running brands in the history of the comic industry. Archie Comics have sold two billion comics and are published in a dozen different foreign languages and distributed all over the world.

Archie Comics has spawned characters whose popularity has spilled over into other media and who have become part of popular culture. Josie and the Pussycats and Riverdale are just some of the many legendary franchises that are part of the Archie Comics library.

According to Matt Nelson, a primary grader at Certified Guarantee Company (CGC), “Archie appeared in Pep Comics #22 in 1942. Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and Reggie appeared in the following years.”

The comics were designed to be a “superhero” type story. The comics became popular quickly, becoming the most popular humor character in comic books.

The characters each showed a certain characteristic we find in everyday life, like Jughead being the first beatnik. Nelson also said, “Betty and Veronica were designed to show the two ends of the spectrum.”

Betty, the nice, cheerful girl, and Veronica, the snobby, rich girl, are both vying for Archie’s attention by constantly plotting against each other.

Teenagers everywhere are obsessed with the show. Senior Tori Price said, “My favorite part about the show is that they always have a twist or new character that keeps me intrigued.”

The comics have stories that are different from the show Riverdale, like Archie’s affair with Mrs. Grundy or Jughead being a loner. In the comics, Mrs. Grundy is actually portrayed as an old woman and Jughead is a fun guy who loves burgers.

Although they have their differences, both the Archie Comics and Riverdale are hugely popular and have become a household name.
