(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS senior Emily Weott spent her Monday, Dec. 4, career shadowing an orthotist for her senior project.

“I shadowed at Orthotic and Prosthetic Center of St. Pete,” said Weott. “An orthotist makes different types of orthopedic braces for people with disabling conditions.”

Weott has had an interest in this career her whole life because her father works in orthopedics.

“During my day, I got to be in the room during evaluations. I even got to work hands on to cast a leg and modify one of the braces,” said Weott.  “I also got to go to out lunch with who I career shadowed and ask them about their experience in the field, their major in college, and more.”

Weott’s favorite part of her experience was seeing the behind the scenes part of the job. She enjoyed seeing close up how to fit a patient with a brace, and the bedside manner that goes along with the job.

Weott said, “I really appreciated this job shadowing as it influenced me on what I want to major in. I plan on shadowing more throughout my senior year to get an even better idea of this profession.”
