Cedris Bullard – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS students have a lot of opportunities to do on-the-job-training (OJT) to prepare them for careers they would like to have in the future. One of the district programs is Manatee Technical College (MTC). MTC can be very beneficial to students who want to get a head start on the future.
MTC is also very helpful to students because it is free in high school. Students do not have to stress about paying college fees and they have two years to save up if they wish to continue their educations. MTC has many classes to offer, including 3D animation, baking & pastry arts, digital design, business management, and marketing management.
There are requirements to join the OJT program. One is that students must be in 11th or 12th grades to apply to take classes at MTC.
A second requirement is to take the TABE test, meaning students will be tested in Adult Basic Education subjects such as math, reading, and language skills.
Students can take these tests online or at MTC free of charge and will get the results that same day. Students who fail a section will be required to take that section over online.
The third requirement is to have transportation to and from MTC.
LRHS junior Shalia Mazion believes she will benefit greatly from the MTC program.
“I am joining MTC for culinary so that I can open my own restaurant,” she said. “I feel like I’ll benefit from MTC a lot because I’ll know the pros and cons of cooking and I’ll be more advanced with my cooking skills.”
