Peyton McLaughlin – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Veteran’s Day is coming up, which makes some LRHS Mustangs express their patriotism for the United States of America.

Many students have family members and friends currently in service or that were injured, killed or retired.

LRHS Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Captain McKenzie Mazzella, senior, said, “Patriotism means to me, being able to recognize how the military can protect us in our everyday lives and allow us to live the way we do.”

Veteran’s day is about showing respect for self and other symbols for our country, learning the history of community, states, and nation, and exercising the right to vote.

LRHS JROTC Major Morgan Lingel, senior, said, “Patriotism means to me, having respect for everyone who has fought for our freedom and honoring those who have died fighting for our freedom.

Although members in the service are respected and supported, being in the service has been known to change people.

LRHS junior Madison Schaefer said, “It’s honestly really sad because you never know when they’re coming back and if they are going to be the same person as they were when they left.”

Ranch reflection – Veterans Day strikes home

Ranch Reflections are articles written by students who want to share their experiences, thoughts, and concerns. This is a great opportunity for students to branch out beyond traditional news stories.

 Peyton McLaughlin – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – This Veteran’s Day means more to me than it usually does because my oldest brother, Dalton, is in the United States Air Force.

I’ve looked up to my brother for as long as I could remember, so his decision to follow his dream into the Air Force shows his loyalty and patriotism for our country.

He is a part of the Special Forces unit and is currently stationed in Turkey.

My brother has two stripes, meaning he’s an Airman First Class.

McLaughlin said, “Being in the Air Force is very fulfilling and rewarding, but it is very hard to be away from my loved ones. It makes it easier getting through the day knowing that I am contributing to keeping America free.”
