(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) -Tuesday night was the first game of the season for the LRHS girls and boys soccer teams.

Girls’ junior varsity (JV) started at 5:30 p.m. at North Port High School, ending in a 1-1 tie.  Sophomore Juanita Diaz scored the goal in the last three minutes of the first half.

Girls’ varsity won 1-0 off a free kick in the last five minutes of the game, with the goal shot by senior and captain Faith Schyck.

Freshman Corinne Kasten said, “It was a well fought game against North Port. We had many shots throughout the game but did not score until Faith Schyck took a high shot from around the outside of the box in the last five minutes, going right over the goalies head. It felt good to start off the season with a win.”

Boys’ varsity won 3-1 at home against rivals Braden River High School.  The goals were scored by seniors Pablo Vargas and Austin Martinez, as well as junior Wilmer Yanez.

Martinez said, “I was nervous at first because Braden River scored first and early in the game, but then Wilmer scored and we were back in it.”

Boys’ varsity has another game at 7 p.m. tonight at home against Palmetto High School.
