(LAKEWOOD RANCH FL) – Starting Monday, Nov. 6, LRHS is having its annual “Mayors Feed the Hungry” canned food drive.  Students are asked to bring in at least one canned food item to their first period teacher. The first period class that brings in the most cans will win a doughnut and juice party.

The cans collected will go to a Suncoast charitable organization. Mayors of cities throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties are participating in this fundraiser and are distributing the food where it is needed.

LRHS English teacher and Quill and Scroll adviser Candice DeLazzer oversees this fundraiser. Last year they collected roughly 2,700 cans of food.

DeLazzer said, “We didn’t raise as much as I had hoped we would last year, but I am hoping to raise a lot more this year, especially with all the hurricanes we have been having around and near the country. There is still a need for food in places where the hurricanes hit the hardest.”

DeLazzer pointed out that if every student brought in at least two cans, the school would raise around 5,000 cans to give to those in need.
