Johnny Reid – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS cross-country teams had their first post-Hurricane Irma race last Saturday, Sept. 23 at the North Port Invitational. This ended a two-week absence of races but the Mustangs still ran well.

Taking on a relatively dry course, the girls’ race kicked things off as sophomore Ava Klein placed seventh overall and broke the 20-minute barrier for the first time with a 19:55.

Senior Shay Lee also placed in the top 25, getting 22 overall. They both helped lead the girls to a third-place team finish.

The boys then followed finishing tenth overall as a team.

Junior Johnny Reid, who placed fourth overall with a time of 16:17, led them. Sophomore Calvin Drake was the second finisher for LRHS, finishing in 17:38.

Senior Sarah Fazio said after the race, “the course had pretty good conditions and it was a good race. I like North Port because it’s always faster than other courses.”

Next week, the teams will travel to Holloway Park for the Invitational. It is one of the largest meets in the state all year and should be very competitive. Race day is Saturday, Sept. 30.
