Homecoming is a time to celebrate a school. The festivities usually center around football games and consist of a week when students can dress up according to each day’s theme. It’s an annual tradition for many American high schools. Homecoming was invented by Chester Brewer, an early 20th century American football coach. He initiated homecoming in 1911 at University of Missouri-Columbia.

LRHS Homecoming is hosted by the school’s Student Government Association (SGA).

Former SGA sponsor LRHS dean Kent Ringquist sponsored SGA until the start of this school year, and has fond homecoming memories.

“Homecoming has always been a tradition for Lakewood Ranch High School,” he said. “It’s a time to bring the students together. If you ask your parents and grandparents about high school, homecoming is the event they remember the most.”

He also added, “Homecoming is usually held around a football game or in late September or early October, sometimes even around school reunions.”

Homecoming week takes place in preparation for the game, and many schools have special dress up days where students are allowed to wear clothing suitable to the theme leading to homecoming. Usually on Fridays students dress up in clothes that show their school spirit.

Current LRHS SGA adviser Heather Kasper said, ” As a class we all decide how we pick the dress up days for spirit week. We then have to go to (LRHS Principal) Mr. (Craig) Little to get them approved.”

Homecoming is a time to bring all the new students together, and will be taking place this year the week of Sept. 18 with the dance on Saturday, Sept. 23.
