Johnny Reid – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- When the buses pulled in to Estero Community Park at around 6:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, it was already raining. By the time the races began the course was flooded from the storms of the past week.

None of this slowed down the LRHS cross-country teams though, as all four teams again continued their success.

The girls’ varsity team placed second overall to St. Brendan High School by only one point while sophomore Ava Klein finished sixth and senior Shay Lee finished seventh overall.

The girls’ junior varsity (JV) team placed three in the top 15 and finished third as a team.

On the boys’ side, the varsity team placed sixth while junior Johnny Reid was the individual runner-up, three seconds behind the winner. The boys’ JV team also finished sixth overall.

Following the race, sophomore Calvin Drake said, “I enjoy the course and think it’s fun because it’s like a true cross-country course.”

By true cross-country course, he is referring to the large man-made hill, flooded grass, hay bales, and sand volleyball courts that competitors must run through on this course.

After such a tough meet, the Mustangs are looking at a quick turn-around due to the possible implications of Hurricane Irma.

The next meet has been moved up two days to Thursday, Sept. 7 in order to avoid any weather interference and to ensure the safety of the athletes.

The combined varsity and JV girls race will begin at 5:45 p.m. with the boys combined race following at 6:25 p.m.
