(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS Speech and Debate team had its first meeting Aug. 15, discussing the club and the upcoming year.  After school on Tuesday, Aug. 29 the first business meeting will be held in room 600. Applications and dues must be turned in during this meeting.

Following the meeting on Aug. 29 there will be a parent meeting at 5:00 p.m. to discuss upcoming travel opportunities and events throughout the year.

One event is the student congress competyition on Sept. 9. Students who want to compete or observe in this event must sign up no later than Sept. 1.  The cost for competitors is $10.

The club will put on a Talk-a-thon Sept. 15. The event will take place during the school day in periods four and six. Students and teachers can gather in the auditorium to watch students present their tournament speeches and performances.  Every time a student repeats their pieces, they get money from their sponsors.

Club historian sophomore Makenzie Horner said, “Speech and Debate is a really fun club.  There are a lot of different events you can compete in, ranging from preforming a skit, to giving a speech, to being part of a mock congress, and much more.”

Competing is a vital portion of speech and debate.  Horner states, “I attended three competitions last year, and I had a good time at each and every one.  It’s a great place to meet new friends.”
